A competition pool is defined by its water, not its size. Consistent depth, wide lanes, deep gutters that absorb wash, water held around 25-28°C, and a maintenance regime tight enough that visibility never drops. Get those right and the pool is fast. Get them wrong and it is simply a long rectangle.

Swim schools that hire competition venues rarely ask the right questions. They ask about booking slots. The questions that matter are about gutters, depth and how often the water is tested.

What makes a pool fast

Swimmers create waves. Waves bounce off walls, off lane ropes, off the bottom, and come back to slow the swimmer down. Every design feature in a serious competition pool exists to kill that returning energy.

  • Depth. Deep water lets the bow wave dissipate downward rather than reflecting off the floor.
  • Gutters. Deck-level overflow gutters swallow surface wash instead of bouncing it back into lane one.
  • Lane width. Wider lanes keep a swimmer’s wash out of their neighbour’s stroke.
  • Wave-quelling lane ropes. Discs that spin and dissipate rather than transmit energy.
  • Empty outside lanes. Championship venues keep buffer lanes for exactly this reason.

Maintaining a competition pool

  1. Test water multiple times daily. Bather load in a competition venue swings enormously between an empty morning and a full gala.
  2. Manage pH before chlorine. Chlorine loses effectiveness as pH climbs. Chasing sanitiser while pH drifts is the most common error in aquatic facilities.
  3. Protect visibility above all. If a lifeguard cannot see the bottom of the deepest lane, the pool closes. There is no negotiating this.
  4. Ventilate indoor halls properly. That harsh “chlorine” smell is chloramines, and it aggravates airways — particularly for swimmers with asthma. It signals poor dosing and poor air handling, not excess chlorine.
  5. Inspect starting blocks and depth signage every session. Blocks require minimum depth. Loose grip surfaces and faded depth markings are how head injuries happen.
  6. Service the gutters and balance tank. Overflow systems silt up and quietly stop working.
  7. Log everything. Water chemistry, closures, incidents. A facility without records has no way to prove it was safe.

Common mistakes

  • Running the water too warm for competition. Warm water feels pleasant on the deck and ruins a distance event.
  • Letting squads dive off blocks without a taught progression. Racing starts take months and start from a seated entry.
  • Allowing hypoxic or breath-hold sets. Underwater distance work risks shallow-water blackout, which arrives without warning and has killed strong swimmers. Serious clubs ban it. So should you.
  • Filling the outside lanes at a meet. Cheap capacity, expensive turbulence.
  • Treating a shallow pool as a starts pool. Depth requirements exist for a reason and are not adjustable by confidence.
  • Ignoring the deck. Wet tile at a gala causes more injuries than anything in the water.

Safety governance

Lifeguard ratios should be written down and enforced, not improvised on the day. Every session needs a person whose only job is watching water. Emergency action plans should be practised, not filed. Coaches on deck should hold current qualifications; internationally, bodies such as AUSTSWIM set the benchmark for teacher training, and in Singapore, Sport Singapore publishes facility and water safety guidance.

Schools bringing children into a competition venue must remember that the pool has no shallow end. A child who is comfortable in a teaching pool is not automatically safe in five lanes of deep water.

Why is competition water kept cool?

Swimmers working hard generate heat they cannot shed. Cool water lets them race; warm water shortens the session and raises core temperature.

Does a deeper pool really make swimmers faster?

Deeper water reduces wave reflection off the bottom, which reduces drag. It is one factor among several, and the gutters and lane ropes matter at least as much.

Can a swim school train in a condo pool?

What qualifications should a coach on deck hold?

A recognised teaching or coaching certification plus a current lifesaving award. Ask to see both. Any professional coach will produce them without hesitation.

How often should competition water be tested?

Several times a day during operating hours, more under heavy bather load. Follow your local regulator, not a figure from overseas.

Are starting blocks safe for teenagers?

With correct depth, a taught entry and supervision, yes. Without any one of those three, no.

Getting it right

Competition pools reward obsessive maintenance. Clear water, stable chemistry, cool temperature, quiet surface. Nothing on that list is glamorous, and all of it is what a swimmer feels in the last fifteen metres of a race.
