The construction methods for private pools — concrete, fibreglass, vinyl-liner, above-ground — are usually compared on cost and lifespan. What to Specify, Whatever the Method
- A standing band around 1.2m where an adult can stand and an instructor can kneel.
- At least one flat end wall, full width, no bench across it.
- Steps and handrail at an end or a corner. Never running down the long side.
- Coping you can grip from in the water, with a hand, while tired.
- Anti-entrapment drain covers, compliant and secured. Ask for the specification in writing.
- A slip-rated wet deck and a clear perimeter you can walk fully around for a rescue.
- A compliant barrier: self-closing, self-latching, latch above child reach.
- Some shade over the shallow end. Unshaded pools go unused for half the day.
Common Mistakes
- Choosing the shell before the depth profile. With fibreglass especially, the mould is the decision. Everything downstream is trim.
- Designing for photographs. Infinity edges, glass walls and vanishing corners all remove places to hold on.
- Building uniformly shallow. Adults cannot swim properly and children are tempted to dive into it. Uniform depth is not a safety feature.
- Above-ground without a fence. The ladder is not a barrier, and children climb.
- Skipping rescue equipment. A reach pole and a ring buoy cost very little. There is no lifeguard in a private pool — you are it.
- Assuming the builder handles compliance. Confirm in writing which regulations apply and who certifies them.
- Planning for breath-holding games and underwater lengths. Do not build for them, do not permit them. Safety Once the Pool Exists
Whatever the method, a private pool is unsupervised water attached to a house. Fence it, alarm the doors, latch the gate. Children who cannot swim stay within arm’s reach of an adult in the water; armbands, noodles and rings are teaching aids, never safety devices. No diving into water whose depth you have not measured, and none at all into a shallow pool. No alcohol around water anyone intends to swim in.
Everyone in the household who supervises should hold a current CPR certificate. If the water is not clear enough to see the deepest drain from the deck, nobody swims until it is.
Getting the Right Advice
Structure, waterproofing and plant belong to pool engineers and builders — take their advice on excavation, ground water and shell type, and never drain a pool without it.
