Resistance swimming means swimming against a current, a tether or added drag instead of travelling through the water. It is a good answer to a short pool and a poor answer to almost everything else. Use it to build aerobic work and to let a coach watch a stroke for minutes at a time. Do not use it to fix a stroke that is broken, because the constraints of the machine will hide the fault.
Three formats exist. A counter-current or endless pool pushes water at you. A tether holds you in place with a belt and a length of elastic. Drag equipment, such as a parachute or a drag shorts, makes normal swimming harder without changing where you are. They behave differently and they are not interchangeable.
What Each Format Actually Does

Why a Small Pool Changes Everything
Most condominium and hotel pools in Singapore are between ten and fifteen metres. That is three or four strokes and a wall. You cannot build an aerobic base in three strokes. Turns dominate, heart rate never settles, and technique work becomes impossible because the swimmer never establishes a rhythm.
Resistance swimming solves that specific problem. It converts a short pool into a continuous one. That is its entire value proposition, and it is a real one.
How to Program a Resistance Session
- Warm up for eight to ten minutes without resistance, or with the current at its lowest setting. Cold shoulders and elastic tension do not mix.
- Work in intervals of thirty seconds to three minutes. Longer than three minutes and the stroke degrades in ways the swimmer cannot feel.
- Rest until breathing is conversational again, not to a stopwatch. Resistance work drives heart rate higher than pool swimming at the same perceived effort.
- Cap total resistance volume at roughly a third of the session. The rest should be normal swimming if any is available.
- Film. Two minutes of continuous stroke from the side and from the front is worth more coaching information than an hour on deck.
- Finish with easy, unresisted swimming or gentle sculling. The shoulder does not enjoy going straight from load to the changing room.
Shoulders Are the Cost
Resistance swimming loads the shoulder in the catch position, repeatedly, without the relief that a turn or a stroke change provides. Swimmers who ramp it quickly get shoulder pain, and shoulder pain in a swimmer rarely resolves by swimming through it.
If a swimmer reports shoulder pain, stop the resistance work and get them to a physiotherapist. Pushing through is how a mild impingement becomes a season out of the water. Reduce load before increasing it, and never add resistance and volume in the same week.
Common Mistakes
- Setting the current fast enough that the swimmer is fighting rather than swimming. The stroke you are training is the stroke you are performing.
- Using a tether for long sets. Elastic changes tension continuously; the swimmer surges and stalls.
- Teaching a beginner in an endless pool. They need to learn to travel, feel water pass, and reach a wall.
- Adding drag equipment to a swimmer whose catch is already poor. It embeds the fault under load.
- Ignoring breathing. Swimmers in place tend to lift the head instead of rotating, because there is no forward momentum to bury it.
- Breath-holding or hypoxic sets against resistance. Never. The combination of high load and restricted breathing raises the risk of blackout, and in a private pool there is usually nobody watching.
- Skipping the cool-down.
Never Train Alone Against a Tether
A tethered swimmer in a private pool is fixed in one place, working hard, face down, often with nobody in the building. If they get into difficulty they cannot reach a wall by swimming; they have to stop, turn, and pull themselves back along the line. Have someone present. Use a quick-release belt. This is not a theoretical concern.
Who It Suits
Triathletes with a hotel pool and a race in six weeks. Masters swimmers whose only water is a condominium pool. Rehabilitating swimmers returning to load under supervision. Coaches wanting sustained video of a stroke. Squad swimmers preparing for open water, where a continuous rhythm with no walls resembles the race far more closely than a 25-metre pool does.
It suits beginners badly. Someone still learning to breathe and float should be in a normal pool with a floor they can stand on and a wall they can reach. Adult beginners are better served by private lessons in a conventional pool.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is resistance swimming as good as swimming lengths?
For aerobic conditioning, close. For technique, no. Turns, travel, pacing and the feel of moving water are all missing, and those are not small things.
How fast should the current be set?
Slow enough that the swimmer holds a normal stroke rate and body position. If the stroke shortens or the head lifts, the current is too fast.
Can I use a tether in a condo pool?
